Project Summary

Washington Middle School is located in Calumet, Michigan, which is on the Keweenaw Peninsula in an area known as Copper Country. Spotted knapweed, an invasive species, is commonly found in and around Calumet. Recognizing its potential to wipe out other valuable and necessary native plants, the seventh-grade students at Washington Middle School developed and implemented a comprehensive plan to remove it.

This project was supported by the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative, one of nine regional hubs that comprise the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative.
